No-Shave November

We're almost halfway into No Shave November and here's some tips to keep it going:

#1 Its all a mental thing: If you're struggling with new growth - and found yourself itching and scratching - welcome to beard boot-camp! No pain no gain. This the crucial test of your ability to withstand little sharp razor-like hair piercing through your pores - and yes some ingrown hair as well.

#2 Okay - a bit of exaggeration above - you can do a few more things to make the transition to your facial hair journey a bit more comfortable. Keep it clean, wash with mild soap, try to resist the itching urge every time you feel like it. Instead use your tips (as opposed to your fingernails) to massage the area - it will lower the sensation without causing scratches.

#3 You're in luck we've got some great beard care products on our site - to help you along. Jojoba Oil, Aloe Vera, and other great gifts from nature's garden go a long way in keeping you feel comfortable. Use a combination of products to control beard dandruff, itching, and keeping your new growth looking nice and groomed.

#4 Don't give up - its the eye of the lion not the eye of the tiger - you have to have a nice mane - have you ever seen a lion shave his mane? I didn't think so. This is a long term investment in your manliness - don't go shaving it as soon as December 1st comes around.

#5 Real Men Have Beards - we've got a great bumper sticker that we will be sending to our customers - and that's what it says. Because to go through that new growth and to keep going and not shaving - that requires patience, strength, courage, humility -- characteristics of long ago found in a few today. Do you have them? If so where's your beard?

Bearded President Gets The Olympic Bid

While it would have been fun for the US to host another Olympic Games - and especially Chicago with its diversity, Lake Michigan beaches, and famed sporting culture -- it was just not meant to be.

The IOC had released an earlier report criticizing aspects of Chicago's bid -- but a first round elimination was shocking to say the least. You can dissect this decision in many ways. What went wrong? and did Rio get the games because there have been no Olympic Games on the South American continent.

I'm sure there are going to be a number of wild and wacky theories as to how the decision was arrived at in Copenhagen on October 2nd, 2009 - so let me just suggest one theory based on our expertise: facial hair.

Basically - President Lula (his full name is: Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva), who is the President of Brazil and will be organizing not only the Olympic Games in 2016 in Rio, but they also have the World Cup in 2014 -- he's got a beard.

Yup - that's it, he's got a nice, beard that sent a message that "We are unique, welcoming, diverse and you don't have to read that in some fancy brochure - you can tell that just by looking at my beard"

Click here to see a picture of his beard

So I have a tip for countries preparing for the 2020 bid - grow a beard!

Gov. Paterson shaves beard then mustache

The New York Times has a nice 3 picture collage on their site that shows Gov. Paterson going from beard to mustache to completely clean shaven.

Unfortunately I would have rather preferred it going in reverse with the latest picture showing the Governor with a nice beard. Too bad -- we would have even happily offered some proper beard care products.

New Packaging for Beardsley

We've been retailing the Beardsley Shampoo and Conditioner ever since we started Beard Care Products. Its an excellent product - have used and can attest to that myself.

Recently they've changed the packaging a bit, so some of you who are regulars of the Beardsley Shampoo and Conditioner might get a bit different packaging. Don't worry -- its the same company.

Falltime = Beardtime

In the world of beard and facial hair growing - there's 2 types of folks. Those who keep their facial hair year-round (Tier 1) and those who grow their beards around fall or winter (Tier 2).

For the Tier 2 folks the beard growing season starts right about now, although some procrastinate to as late as "No-Shave November". Its great to have the Tier 2 folks join us for the fall and winter months. We wish you would stay and so here's an analogy I came up with to come to terms with this phenomenon:

Growing a beard is like having a vacation getaway, a retreat. "A beard is a man's castle" to twist the old adage. Some can getaway for only short periods of time (that is they grow their beard and shave it off), and that's our Tier 2 folks.

So to them I would like to present his example: Have a year round retreat and getaway by not shaving. You'll do a favor to your skin, save lots of time, save yourself from countless cuts and can get up for work 15 minutes later. See it really is a retreat -- not shaving.

*New* Product: Canvas "The Artist" Beard Bar

Facial hair is a work of art -- no less than a masterpiece. If Mona Lisa was a man she'd have a beard and that would make Leonardo de Vinci's work all the more interesting. If you doubt that just take a look at de Vinci's picture - he has a beard as well.

So here's the motivational message of this post: Don't let anybody talk down your facial hair. Think of it as the last stroke on the work of art that is your face - if you keep shaving it its like running an eraser across Monet's "Water Lily Pond".

With that in mind, we've introduced the Canvas Bar - for the artist in you. At $6.50 its got saponified olive, coconut, palm and sunflower seed oil. A potent mixture for keeping that beard looking its best. Purchase at the following link: Beard Soaps

Amish, Beards, and Leather

The Amish people are known for keeping beards after they get married. Often their beards are usually fist-length with the mustaches trimmed as well.

It kind of fits in well with their old-world values and emphasis on cottage industries which allows them to earn a living without sacrificing the values they cherish.

The Amish are known for making quality products whether for use by their own community or by outsiders. Finished products include: leather goods, wooden structures, quilts, furniture and more.

Their leather shops are particularly fascinating with products for people and horses.

You'll find old antiquated machines that are hand-operated and require skill and apprenticeship to master.

Perhaps their handmade leather belts are the best of them all, featuring native US leather and Old World attention and quality.

In big discount stores leather belts usually run $19.99 to $39.99. Consider that price and then you'll realize what a great bargain it is to purchase a hand-tooled belt made from native US cowhide in the USA at $24.95 from Henry Miller & Sons Leathermakers.

Check them out at: Amish Leather

Its Official: Facial hair at its most popular since the 70's

If you've been seeing a lot of people growing facial hair recently -- its attributable to one of two things:

1.) Our beard care products make it easier for men to groom and take proper care of the beards (and I'd like to think that's a big part of it!)

2.) Growing facial hair is becoming a very popular trend again.

No need to split "facial hairs" over this -- we'll be humble and attribute it to the latter reason.

Today (January 30th), LSU's paper, the Daily Reveille featured an article about the immense popularity of facial hair and the comeback its making.

That's especially evident on college and university campuses where grass-roots movements are leading the charge against the clean-shaven.

For more details read: Facial Hair at its most popular since the 70's.

Grizzly Men

I've heard of a playoff beard - but here's a new twist: "Conference Beard". That's what the Dickinson State Men's Basketball Team are calling it -- and get this: Ever since the beards have been growing, DSU hasn't lost a game.

The Blue Hawks are 6-0 in 2009 and are alone at the top of the DAC with a 7-0 record.

But neither I nor the players call it "the luck of the beard." But luck or not, that natural growth sure gives you a determined and don't mess with me look, when 5 guys step onto the paint with some serious facial hair.

All in all - I believe Senior Mark Versen has the best beard of them all. From the press report it seems he’s not touching his new facial hair as long as the team keeps winning.

Now if only the Memphis Grizzlies got some guys to do that -- I'd think they'd do much better.

Beards and Presidents

Continuing on the theme and subject of the Inauguration, we at Beard Care Products are reminded of US Presidents who have kept beards.

The Wall Street Journal this week had a page where they showed all the Presidents along with snippets from their Inaugural address. Naturally, we gravitated towards the ones that had beards first!

We got an idea of doing an informal poll, on what our readers think is the President with the best facial hair!

To keep it limited, we went for the full facial hair and chose five former Presidents. Click on the links below to read complete profiles at Wikipedia but don't forget to come back and vote!

Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the US.

Ulysses S. Grant, 18th President of the US.

Rutherford B. Hayes, 19th President of the US.

James A. Garfield, 20th President of the US.

Benjamin Harrison, 23rd President of the US.

The poll is to your right -- vote now! -- Yes you can vote, and Yes you can grow your facial hair!

Inauguration

Today the USA made history by electing Barack Obama as the 44th President. There were references to Lincoln and that reminded me of Lincoln's beard. He had a very nice beard, gave him a determined and distinguishing look.

The closest we got to anybody having facial hair at the Inauguration today was Rick Warren. He has a goatee from what I could tell.

Soap It Up!

We've come out with two new soaps one for our "Beard Care" Line and the other for our "Skin Care" Line.

For the Beard Care Line, we have a custom formulated soap called "Botanical Beard Bar" that we've worked on for a while now.

We wanted to combine the effect of oils and aloe-vera into a great botanical soap that has a refreshing scent and I believe that is what we have humbly accomplished.

You can do a quick beard wash before bed if you don't want to go through the shampoo route. We are selling our it for $6.95 -- click here to read more and purchase.

For our Natural Skin Care Line, we have our Pure Skin 'Pine Tar' Soap. This is as macho as skin care for men can get.

Pine Tar has a long history of being used by people as a natural treatment for dry, itchy or flaky skin.

With a 20% pine tar content, along with olive, coconut and castor oils this is one skin treatment that is manly, natural, and affordable at only $6.95 a bar.

The reason we put the 20% is because the product is not therapeutic if it has less than 20%, so even if that is more information then you wanted to know -- you have to know what you're getting right? Below is the link to purchase, and directions for use.
Click here to read more and purchase.

DIRECTIONS OF USE FOR PURE SKIN PINE TAR SOAP:

Step #1 - Rub Pine Tar Bar onto clean wash cloth or onto hands with warm (to open pores) water and develop a nice lather similar to the appearance of shaving cream. Lightly massage onto face or other body part for approximately 30 seconds and rinse with warm water.

Step #2 – Repeat Step 1 but rinse with cold water on the 2nd time (to close pores) and lock in all the healing properties of this bar. Allow to dry completely.

If using for acne or skin breakouts - do NOT follow with a moisturizer. If using for Psorisis or flaky skin condition, you may follow with a moisturizing product

Natural Skin Care for Men

For sometime now, we have had our Natural Skin Care for Men website as part of our range of offerings to discerning gentlemen. That's because we think there is a natural link between those interested in optimal care for their facial hair and those interested in superb care for their face and skin.

We've added new products to our growing range of skin care products and we just added two products today. One is a "Moisturizing Hydrator and Aftershave." The great thing about this, is that its alcohol-free and fragrance-free.

It contains meadowsweet extract which is known to help the body's defense against bacteria which can lead to skin inflammations such as acne. It also contains Vitamin E and Milk Protein for a triple combination designed to keep you skin looking young, healthy and silky-smooth. Each hydration lasts up to 16 hours. Currently we are selling it for only $16.95.

The 2nd product we've added is a "Deep Cleansing Masque". This is perfect skin detoxification for men. In the city, in the traffic, all the environmental toxins can wreak havoc on your skin and face.

The Deep Cleansing Masque contains Sea Kelp, which has powerful antioxidant properties. To pack a powerful punch, this macho detox also contains antioxidant vitamins B,C, and E rounded out with Aloe Vera. Use once or twice a week to keep your skin feeling firm and soft. Currently we are selling it for only $18.95

If you would like to purchase either or both of the above products please visit our Men's Skin Care at Beard Care Products to order.

We offer free shipping on all orders over $50 (Priority Mail - gets to you in 2-3 days and faster than courier ground service), so you get a really great deal!
